From Burnout to Balance: My Journey Into Movement, Pilates and Wellness

Gabby Robinson is a Pilates teacher, yoga instructor and wellness coach near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Read her story — from burnout to balance — and discover how intelligent movement changed everything.

Welcome to my wellness space.

I'm Gabby — a Pilates teacher, yoga instructor and wellness coach working online and locally near Henley-on-Thames, Goring, Reading and the surrounding Thames Valley.

I specialise in helping people reconnect with their bodies through intelligent movement, restorative practices and personalised wellness support. My work blends Pilates, yoga, posture correction and movement therapy to help people build strength, improve mobility and recover from injury, stress and burnout.

I also offer wellness therapies including red light therapy and vibration plate training to support recovery and overall wellbeing alongside movement sessions.

This blog is where I share knowledge, reflections and ideas gathered across many years of working with the body. And today, I want to share a little of my own story.

Teaching Movement: My Comfort Zone

Being a movement teacher for many years has allowed me to hone my skills deeply. Using anatomical language, observing posture and guiding people through movement patterns feels natural to me — almost like a second language.

Writing, on the other hand — expressing opinions and putting them out into the world — has always felt more daunting.

But over the past few years I've come to believe that sharing knowledge, experience and honest reflection has real value. If something I write resonates with someone, or helps them understand their body better, then it's worth saying.

One of the themes I'll explore throughout this blog is burnout — what it really is, how it develops in the body, and how we begin to restore balance. Because it's a topic I know deeply. Not just professionally, but personally.

A Lifelong Love of Movement

Movement has been part of my life since childhood. Growing up in Marlow, I loved dancing, gymnastics and ballet. I was never particularly strong at traditional school PE, and my ball skills remain… a work in progress!

But the love of physical movement never left me. Living near the river, I grew up around rowing — my brother was a talented competitive rower, representing the GB Junior squad at Henley Regatta. I did not reach those particular heights, but the spirit of sport stayed with me.

At sixteen I took my first part-time jobs in a sports shop and then a gym. That early exposure led me to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Science, and from there into a career built around understanding how the body moves.

Studying the Science of Movement

Over the years I've trained in many disciplines: weight training, aerobics, Pilates, yoga and functional movement. Alongside formal qualifications, I've attended countless workshops, retreats and professional development courses.

I've always been fascinated by anatomy and physiology — the remarkable way muscles, joints and fascia work together. Watching how someone moves tells an enormous story.

I've developed a keen eye for postural imbalances and compensatory patterns. When I observe a client moving, I can often sense areas of tension, restriction or weakness — and it's this awareness that allows me to create truly bespoke sessions that help people move more efficiently, comfortably and freely.

Pushing My Body — and Learning Its Limits

Throughout my life I've also tested my body extensively. Long-distance running, cycling, heavy weight lifting, skydiving. Cycling 350 kilometres across the Jordanian desert for charity. Walking 100 kilometres along the Thames Path in a single day.

These experiences taught me an enormous amount about physical endurance, mental resilience and the remarkable capability of the human body.

They also, eventually, taught me about its limits.

When the Body Finally Says No

Like many people juggling work, family and life's many demands, I reached a point where my body said: enough.

I am a mother of twins, a business owner, and — like so many women I work with — someone who somehow also becomes the cook, cleaner, organiser, taxi driver and chief animal carer all at once.

A few years ago, I experienced burnout.

Looking back, the signs had been there for a long time. My body had been whispering — then gradually shouting — that it needed rest and change. Burnout rarely arrives suddenly. It is almost always the result of long periods of stress, overwork and quietly ignoring the signals your body sends you.

That experience changed my relationship with my body completely.

Learning to Listen — and Rest

Through recovery, I became far more attuned to the signals my body was giving me. I began prioritising Yoga, Pilates, Breath work and Restorative Movement — not as extras, but as essentials.

Instead of constantly pushing harder, I learned to pause more often. To slow down. To quite literally stop and smell the roses.

And from that place of listening, I built a far more compassionate, sustainable relationship with my body than I had ever had before.

Why I Created My Wellness Practice

Today, my work is focused on helping others experience that same reconnection — with their bodies, their energy and their sense of self.

I offer:

  • Online and in-person Pilates classes (1-1 and small group)

  • On-demand movement and wellness courses, including the Wellness in Motion 6-week programme

  • Monthly wellness membership with 8–10 on-demand classes

  • Personalised postural assessment and injury-aware movement

  • Red light therapy and vibration plate training

I work with clients locally near Henley-on-Thames, Reading, Goring and the wider Thames Valley, as well as online with people across the UK.

Many of my clients come to me navigating back pain, postural imbalances, injury recovery, fatigue, burnout or the physical challenges of perimenopause. My goal is always the same: to help them feel stronger, more balanced and more at home in their bodies.
